Antique Feathered Native American Cast Iron Matchholder with Respectful Image

Not much is known about this attractive turn-of-the century Native American cast iron match holder with a respectful image of a Native American. No markings above or below. It is interesting that the Native American pictured is wearing feathers,
symbols of trust, honor, strength, wisdom, power and freedom, rather than a chief headdress as so many are depicted. The feathers are deeply revered and a sign of high honor, not a cheesy “tribute.” Nor is this tourist trash. It stands about 3 inches (7 cm) tall and 1.75 inches (4 cm) in diameter including the face. Included on the back is a nicely defined striker panel. The nice cast iron patina has wear on high points on the face and sides attesting to its age. We are not saying that this piece was designed or made by Native Americans, only that it has a respectful image of a Native American.
A
perfect accessory for a pipe or cigar smoker, a country or general store decoration, or a bit of late Victorian or Edwardian decor. It could be a nice
addition to a fireplace or barbecue grill, filled with wooden matches
(available in stores).
